Cyber PR Ariel's Publicity Overview
INTRODUCING…BANDLETTER As the music industry continues its radical evolution, it becomes increasingly difficult for musicians to maintain their fan base. Every week, 1,000 new albums are released, and the overload makes it nearly impossible for even the most hardcore music fans to keep track. There is, however, a crucial element that has been largely overlooked most artists - their own e-mail list. Nearly every artist has built up an e-mail list of considerable size, and artists tend to overlook the opportunities that an e-mail list can provide. This powerful communication tool, if used in a smart manner can make the bond between musicians and their fans incredibly strong. If a fan visits a musician's website five or six times over the course of a year, it should be considered a big success. Bands often spend tremendous amounts of money and resources on the development of their websites, yet they spend precious little time figuring out the best ways to leverage their growing e-mail lists. By sending out two strategic e-mail newsletters each month, musicians would be able to reach out to their fans 24 times over the course of a year, four times as often as those same fans would visit their website. Ariel Hyatt (Ariel Publicity) and Kevin Greenstein (Inside Hockey) launched BandLetter at SXSW in Austin in 2005. Hyatt's music publicity business just celebrated its eleventh anniversary, while Greenstein has spent most of the past ten years in the Internet publishing realm. Together, they plan to help musicians of all success levels maximize the impact of their e-mail newsletters. BandLetter has developed a number of different content concepts that will help bands keep their fans engaged, whether they're on tour, in the studio or promoting their latest album release. Hyatt has spent the past nine years helping bands promote their albums and tours, and she's played a key role in the development of Band Letter's promotional strategies. "My company works very hard to create a media profile for our artists but when it comes time for outreach to their most important asset, their fans, artists tend to send haphazard e-mail blasts that don’t treat the fans like the gold that they are.” Band Letter’s $29.99 monthly fee covers the development of a customized template that includes the band's logo and colors and the implementation of an online database in which the musicians can easily maintain and grow their e-mail list. The monthly fee allows the musicians to send two newsletters per month for up to 1500 names. Each newsletter also contains a free MP3, giving fans a compelling reason to open each email they receive from the band. It's a promotion that costs the musicians very little, but it goes a long way towards building goodwill with their fans. "Most independent musicians are working with extremely tight budgets," Mr. Greenstein said. "We wanted them to be able to afford our core service, and selling just two CDs per month would enable each customer to break even. Getting past the initial concerns about money makes it possible for the musicians to focus instead on what's really important - building better relationships with their fans."
